Overview

Overview of One Health in Viet Nam

The One Health approach recognizes the close interconnection between human health, animal health, and environmental health in preventing and responding to emerging infectious diseases. In Viet Nam, the One Health Partnership for Zoonotic Diseases (OHP) evolved from the Partnership for Avian and Human Influenza (PAHI), which was established in 2003 to coordinate national and international efforts in response to avian influenza and pandemic threats. In 2016, PAHI was officially transformed into the One Health Partnership (OHP) to address broader zoonotic, environmental, food safety, and antimicrobial resistance challenges through a multi-sectoral approach.

The Partnership is co-chaired by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Ministry of Health, with participation from 57 official national and international partners, including government agencies, UN organizations, development partners, research institutions, universities, NGOs, and the private sector. OHP Viet Nam continues to serve as Viet Nam’s central national coordination platform for One Health implementation.

The Partnership supports policy dialogue, technical coordination, resource mobilization, and implementation of national priorities related to pandemic prevention and preparedness, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food safety, biodiversity conservation, animal welfare, and environmental health. OHP also facilitates annual high-level forums, technical working groups, and collaboration between domestic and international stakeholders to strengthen prevention, early detection, and response to zoonotic diseases and emerging public health threats in Viet Nam.
